Friday, April 02 2004 @ 12:32 AM ESTUPDATED FRIDAY, APRIL 2.
Christmas and Easter seasons always bring out the religious articles in national magazines and newspapers and the documentaries on television. This Easter season is no exception, and Holy Week opens Sunday with three national programs featuring conservative Christian scholars and leaders.
Fox News Channel (cabel and satellite) will air an exclusive interview with best-selling Christian author and journalist Lee Strobel with former Ohio Congressman John Kasich on his Heartland program on Saturday, April 3 (8 PM EST, check for local times). Strobel is the author of the best-selling The Case for Christ, The Case for Faith, and other titles, including his new The Case for the Creator. In each of these named books Strobel, a former Chicago legal affairs journalist, investigates the claims of Christianity by interviewing leading experts from around the world on the issues at stake in each issue.
Fox News airs a second program, a one-hour special, "Who Is Jesus?", on Palm Sunday, April 4, at 9 PM EST (check for local times). Strobel, interviewed for that documentary as well, told Answers In Action in an exclusive interview, "I always have trepidation whenever secular television deals with historical issues regarding Jesus." He continued with some confidence, "I've been praying, though, that this show will help people understand that Christianity isn't based on legend or mythology, but it's built on a solid foundation of historical truth."
Meanwhile, ABC News is airing a three-hour special on Jesus, Paul, and the early days of Christianity on Monday, April 5 (8 PM EST, check for local times), hosted by veteran newscaster Peter Jennings. Jennings stirred up controversy several years ago with his extremely critical documentary, The Search for Jesus.
In the current program, some conservative scholars and some liberal to extremely liberal scholars are interviewed. Strobel told Answers In Action, "They've interviewed solid experts for the show, including Paul Maier, N. T. Wright, Luke Timothy Johnson, Ben Witherington III, and others." Nevertheless, Strobel warned, "they also interviewed such liberals as John Dominic Crossan, Robert Funk, Marcus Borg, John Shelby Spong, Elaine Pagels, Paula Fredriksen, and Karen Armstrong." Strobel concluded, "The show's producers personally assured me that this will be a balanced and fair telecast, and we'll have to see how it turns out."
